We teamed up with local artist, Aida Salehi, to create this abstract Hapuu design. Hapuu ferns can be found on all of the main Hawaiian islands. These beautiful tree ferns have large fronds that extend out up to 10 feet! These ferns are very slow growing (the average growth rate is about 3.5 inches per year). The soft hapuu pulu ( a wood like fiber that covers its trunk) was once used for dressing wounds, embalming, and stuffing pillows and mattresses.
Did you know that all tree ferns are considered threatened species because they are found in the rapidly diminishing rainforests of the world? These ferns are threatened not only because of deforestation, but also because of development and its use for orchid medium and landscaping.
